“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season that recalls the previous game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

    Minnesota 20, Washington 17 Week 9, Nov. 6, 2022

The Commanders were outplayed in the fourth quarter as the Minnesota Vikings came from behind to defeat Washington, 20-17, at FedEx Field in Landover, MD.

When Taylor Heinicke connected with Dax Milne from six yards, the Commanders extended their lead to 17-7 with 14:12 remaining. However, from that point forward, Ron Rivera’s team was badly outplayed by the Vikings. Driving 68 yards in nine plays, the Vikings inched closer to 17-10 on Greg Joseph’s 25-yard field goal.

Heinicke then threw an interception, and the Vikings only needed two plays to go 12 yards, tying the game at 17-17 on Kirk Cousins’ 12-yard touchdown pass to running back Dalvin Cook with 7:46 remaining.

The Commanders then feebly went three and out, punted and the Vikings proceeded to maintain possession of the ball for 6:00, compiling a 15 play 44 yard drive, culminating in Joseph’s 28-yard field goal, which only left the Commanders with :12 on the clock.

Curtis Samuel led Washington with 65 receiving yards on three receptions, and Terry McLaurin added 56 receiving yards on five receptions. Heinicke was 15 of 28 for 149 yards and two passing touchdowns and an interception. Cousins completed 22 of 40 attempts for 265 yards, including two touchdowns and one interception.

All in all, it was a very disappointing fourth quarter for both the Washington offense and defense. With the win, the Vikings rose to 7-1, while Washington fell to 4-5. Unfortunately, the Vikings have won five of the last six meetings between the teams, including the previous three contests.
