Ethan Hawke has publicly stood by Paul Dano, offering high praise for the actor following a wave of negative remarks that recently made headlines.
Appearing on The Joe Rogan Experience, Hawke addressed the controversy sparked after director Quentin Tarantino harshly criticized the Swiss Army Man star by labeling him “weak sauce” and the “worst f****** actor in SAG.”
Rather than focusing on the insult itself, Hawke framed the moment as a powerful lesson in how negativity can be overshadowed by genuine support from peers.
“I don’t think Paul Dano ever knew that so many people loved him,” Hawke shared.
“He’s gotta wake up one morning and find out this director’s went off on him and saying these hateful things, but anyone who knows Quentin knows he just talks and talks,” he added, suggesting the comments were more bluster than substance.
Hawke went on to emphasize Dano’s character and reputation within the industry, noting that those who truly know him were quick to rally in his defense.
“Anyone who knows Paul knows he’s a world-class human being,” Hawke said.
Reflecting on the outpouring of support that followed the criticism, Hawke highlighted the bigger takeaway from the situation.
“All this love for Paul is coming out. There’s a great lesson in that. You don’t have to worry about the negativity people send your way,” he concluded.
