    Meet Tuhin Kanta Pandey, SEBI’s New Chairman Who Will Replace Madhabi Puri Buch

    Tuhin Kanta Pandey, who was earlier India’s finance secretary, will now become SEBI’s new chairman after Madhabi Puri Buch

    India’s former finance secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey appointed SEBI’s new chairman.

    Former finance secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on Thursday. He will be taking over from Madhabi Puri Buch whose term will soon come to an end.

    Pandey is a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Odisha cadre.

    In September 2024, he was appointed as India’s finance secretary and took over as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance in January 2025.

    Earlier, he was the Secretary of three Departments, which were, the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), the Department of Personnel and Training and the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM). Both the DIPAM and DPE came under the Ministry of Finance.

    He was the longest-serving secretary in charge of DIPAM. In his role, Pandey oversaw key disinvestment programs which were aimed at increasing the value of central government sectors.

    Earlier, Pandey held various important positions in the central government and Odisha’s state government.

    In the Union Government, Pandey was appointed as Joint Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Joint Secretary of the Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog).

    He worked as administrative head in the Departments of General Administration, Transport, Commercial Taxes, Finance and Health in the Odisha government.

    Pandey also worked as Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation and Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation.

    He also worked in the Regional Office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

    The momentous achievements made by Pandey include supervising the public listing of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and finalising the historic sale of Air India successfully.

    Briefly, he also took the position of Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

    Pandey earned a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and completed his MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK).
